The Arctic Circle represents the most comprehensive international platform for dialogue and cooperation concerning the future of the Arctic region. It operates as an open, democratic forum that brings together a diverse range of stakeholders, including governments, organizations, corporations, academic institutions, think tanks, environmental groups, indigenous communities, civil society actors, and other interested parties with a focus on Arctic development and its global implications. As a nonprofit and nonpartisan entity, the Arctic Circle aims to facilitate constructive discussion and collaborative effort.
Assemblies
The annual Arctic Circle Assembly stands as the largest international gathering dedicated to Arctic issues, attracting over 2,000 participants from approximately 60 countries. Held each October at the Harpa Conference Center and Concert Hall in Reykjavík, Iceland, the Assembly hosts a broad spectrum of attendees—from heads of state and government officials to parliament members, researchers, business leaders, indigenous representatives, environmental advocates, students, activists, and other stakeholders invested in Arctic concerns. The event serves as a vital platform for exchanging ideas and fostering partnerships.
Forums
Beyond the flagship Assembly, the Arctic Circle organizes specialized forums addressing targeted aspects of Arctic cooperation. Past forums include sessions in Alaska and Singapore in 2015 focusing on shipping routes and port development; the role of Asian nations in Arctic affairs; and maritime issues. In 2016, forums were held in Nuuk, Greenland, exploring economic development for Arctic communities and sustainable regional growth in Québec City. The 2017 forums saw discussions in Washington, D.C. on U.S.-Russia relations within the Arctic context and in Edinburgh examining Scotland’s engagement with the northern regions. Future forums are scheduled for the Faroe Islands and the Republic of Korea. These events are organized through collaborations with governmental bodies, research institutions, and public organizations.
Partners
The Arctic Circle collaborates with a global network of organizations—including think tanks, universities, corporations, research bodies, governmental agencies, and civil society groups—allowing them to host meetings within its platform. Participants have the flexibility to set session agendas and select speakers. The organization provides a venue for partners to present their work, share developments, network with peers, and increase awareness of their initiatives.
Topics
The content of the Assembly program is crafted collaboratively with partner organizations. Topics addressed have encompassed a wide array of issues such as: sea ice melt and extreme weather patterns; indigenous rights and cultural heritage; security considerations; Arctic investment frameworks; regional economic development; shipping infrastructure; energy resources; European and Asian roles; Asia's interest in the Northern Sea Route; circumpolar health; traditional knowledge integration; tourism and aviation; marine science; ecosystems conservation; renewable energy solutions for remote communities; oil and gas exploration risks; mineral extraction; commercial cooperation; maritime law and treaties; fisheries management; geology and glaciology; and broader geopolitical dynamics involving the Himalayan Third Pole.
The annual Assembly also showcases arts and cultural exhibits that highlight the unique attributes of Arctic societies through performances, exhibitions, and programs held each October.
